Windowing, Crowdfunding, Reviving, Educating, and Advertising......
FSDD #76 is present participling the way forward.

A Quick Intro On The State Of Windowing
When I asked a friend recently what they learned from Sundance: The Final PC Chapter, they said “Most filmmakers don’t even know what a theatrical window is”. Well, if that’s you and you’ve been bashful to confess, we’ve got you. Or rather David A. Gross does. He’s penned a clear “everything you wanted to know about” post, that overflows with the specific in a truly great way, along with the back up to go deeper. If you don’t already subscribe, here’s a good time to jump in.

There are systems for everything, including… Crowdfunding!
Kickstarter is closing in on it’s 17 year anniversary. It’s become almost old school. When you read Dan Mirvish’s plan for his latest campaign, you know he’s a pro, including the fact that he knows the crowdfund raise is more of the inciting incident than the event itself. I was impressed though and it felt to me like state of the art stuff.

Can Revival Houses “revive” Cinema?
We are in the midst of a revival house revival! By the end of 2025, North American theaters saw roughly 100 re-release and anniversary engagements, a significant jump from just around 60 in 2019. While celebrating the recent surge in popularity of revival screenings, Ellis J. Sutton does not shy away from the uncomfortable truth: Nostalgia alone cannot sustain cinema:
“Playing the hits” works best as one strategy among many: it keeps the flame of moviegoing culture alive, especially during content lulls, but theaters will ultimately thrive through a combination of old and new – timeless classics and fresh hits – all delivered as part of an experience audiences can’t get at home.

You must learn the language before you can fully communicate in it….
The Long Take is back with the second installment of his Guide to Cinematic Language series, where he shares with you how to watch movies differently and what to look for to better understand them, based on all he’s learned from his years of loving and watching cinema. This time he’s talking about cinematography.
We don’t usually think about the camera as a character. But in many films, it’s the invisible presence guiding our attention, deciding what we’re allowed to see, how close we’re allowed to get and how long we are asked to stay there.
That presence is cinematography.

Move over, Don Draper!
No we won’t be making any Super Bowl ad plays in 2027, but we do want to get the word out about FilmStack Daily Digest. To that end: an ad!
But first… FilmStack Daily Digest is the newsroom of FilmStack, it’s a digital magazine built by filmmakers for filmmakers. It’s a place to gather all the brilliant and diverse writing here on the ‘Stack to help us go farther, faster, because we’re going together.
FSDD runs on volunteer leaderless community effort, with all proceeds going to the Filmmakers Emergency Relief Fund. If you haven’t upgraded to paid yet, now is the perfect time to do it. When you do, you’ll be saying…
You believe in filmmakers.
You believe in community.
You believe in building a better cinema ecosystem, one great idea at a time.
We can’t guarantee your day will be 100% better after you upgrade to paid, but there’s a good chance it’ll be at least 10% better. And that’s something worth subbing about!
